Berkenbile Receives Agricultural Educations Graduate of Distinction Award
Dr. Phil Berkenbile, Oklahoma CareerTech Director, has been named Oklahoma State University Agricultural Education 2006 Graduate of Distinction. He received the award Tuesday, April 4, 2006, during the department’s annual awards reception in the Student Union ballroom. Vernon Kouts received the Agricultural Communications Distinguished Alumnus award at this year’s departmental awards banquet. Kouts graduated from Oklahoma A&M with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Journalism in 1953. Since that time, he has turned his journalism training into an extensive career. “My first job was with the Oklahoma Press Association,” Kouts said. Complete story. Many of us share the same memories of wearing a blue corduroy jacket and the opportunities that it brought. The purpose of Collegiate FFA is to offer a way to stay involved with the FFA. Collegiate FFA also presents its members with leadership, personal and professional development, and networking opportunities. Three students graduated from the department in May, receiving the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Education. Marcus Ashlock will be moving to Manhattan, Kansas, where he has accepted an assistant professor position in agricultural communications at Kansas State University. Danna Kelemen will be moving to Washington, D.C., where she will join her husband who is a lobbyist for AARP. She would eventually like to work in academia, teaching part-time or at an adjunct faculty level. Brent Young has recently accepted a position at North Dakota State University where he will be an assistant professor in Agricultural Education. In the fall we told you about the newly created Leadership Education Institute, a product of a USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant awarded to faculty members Penny Pennington, Cindy Blackwell, and Bill Weeks. Comments From the Department Head
Spring semester was fast paced with a huge range of teaching, research and outreach activities being undertaken by faculty, staff and students in the department. Student enrollment in the agricultural communications, agricultural education and agricultural leadership undergraduate courses was excellent. Graduate enrollment was stable with increasing numbers of students enrolled in distance education course offerings. The graduate courses delivered at a distance incorporate a variety of technologies and are Internet based. The spring semester culminated with graduation on May 6, which included a commencement speech from President George Bush. Highlights of research and outreach activities follow: Complete story.
