Personal
James Leising is Professor and Assistant Director of International Agricultural Programs, Student Outcomes Assessment and Outreach for the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University. Prior to assuming this position, Dr. Leising was Head of the Department of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Oklahoma State University, from 1995 to 2007.  He was responsible for academic leadership, financial management and accountability of the department.  Also, Dr. Leising was Supervisor of Teacher Education at the University of California, Davis from 1976 to 1995.  In this position, he directed the agricultural education undergraduate and graduate agricultural teacher education programs. Also, he provided professional development programs for secondary and community college agricultural education teachers and conducted state-wide projects to improve teaching and learning in K-16 education.

A nationally recognized scholar in Agricultural Education, Dr. Leising is the co-author of three books, numerous journal articles and papers on subjects of secondary agricultural education, agricultural literacy and the infusion of global agriculture perspectives across the curriculum.  He served as the lead investigator in the development of the core agriculture curriculum; standards and benchmarks used in California secondary agricultural education programs. Dr. Leising developed and published one of the first curriculum frameworks for kindergarten through twelfth grade agricultural literacy. The Food and Fiber Systems Curriculum Framework is used in over 15 states. He has secured over three million dollars in extramural grants and contracts that have supported a wide range of scholarly activities.  Dr. Leising has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in agricultural education and led workshops for elementary and secondary agriculture and science teachers. He has presented research papers at state, regional, national and international conferences and meetings.

Dr. Leising has been active in professional organizations. He served the American Association for Agricultural Education (AAAE) as Secretary, Western Region President and National President.  In 2008, Dr. Leising was recognized as a “Fellow” in AAAE Dr. Leising was Second Vice President of the national honorary, Alpha Tau Alpha and was chapter advisor of the UC-Davis Gamma Chapter for fifteen years and the Oklahoma State Chapter for eight years.  Dr. Leising has chaired the Editing Managing Board for the Journal of Agricultural Education, and is past Associate Editor for the Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education, American Society of Agronomy.

Professor Leising earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education from the University of Nebraska in l968 and began his career as an agricultural education teacher in Franklin, Nebraska. He was awarded the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Agricultural Education and Adult Education from Iowa State University in 1973 and 1976 respectively.

Dr. Leising has had international experience in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Japan, Thailand and China.  These experiences included study and presentation of lectures and papers in Japan, Thailand and China, cultural exchanges in Thailand, Japan and China, and assistance to farmers in Guatemala and Costa Rica.
